Water is Life, Not a Commodity: Join the Movement for Change!
About OWORAC
Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC) is a pan-African movement dedicated to defending the human right to water across the continent. We are a network of grassroot organisations, community movements, activists, trade unions, and civil society groups united by the belief that access to clean, affordable water is a fundamental right, not a commodity for profit.
What We Do
- Advocacy & Campaigns: We lead advocacy efforts at the local, national, and international levels, challenging the corporate takeover of Africa’s water resources. Our campaigns focus on ensuring public control of water utilities, opposing market-driven policies that prioritise profits over people, and exposing the harmful impacts of water privatisation.
- Community Engagement: We work directly with communities across Africa, helping them organise and engage with water authorities and policymakers. Through town halls, workshops, and the annual Africa Week of Action Against Water Privatisation, we amplify community voices and equip them to take action.
- Research & Awareness: OWORAC conducts in-depth research to expose the negative impacts of water privatisation and advocate for equitable, public water systems. We collaborate with researchers, journalists, and public health experts to provide data-driven evidence supporting the need for public water management.
- International Solidarity: We partner with global movements, trade unions, and human rights organisations to build international solidarity and pressure policymakers to prioritise water justice over corporate interests.
Our Mission
OWORAC’s mission is to resist the growing wave of water privatisation in Africa and to advocate for public, community-driven water management systems. We work to empower communities to push back against the privatisation and commodification of their water services, amplify their voices, and demand transparency and accountability from both governments and international financial institutions.
Our Vision
We envision an Africa where every person, regardless of socio-economic status, has equitable access to clean and affordable water. Our ultimate goal is to end water poverty across the continent and build a future where water remains a public good that is accessible to all Africans, free from privatisation, exploitation and corporate capture.
